Answering Service vs AI Receptionist: Cost in Canada (2026)

By Laith Nasrallah·September 30, 2026·7 min read

Quick answer

In September 2026, staffed answering and virtual receptionist services published prices from about $275 CAD a month (Canadian) and US$250 to US$2,100 a month (US-based), which works out to roughly US$3 to US$10 per call or minute. AI answering services published C$99 to $999 CAD a month, about $1 CAD per call or a flat fee. The right choice depends on how many calls you get and how many of them need a human.

Every missed call to a clinic, a roofer or a law firm is a customer who might call the next name on Google. So most owners eventually ask the same question: should I pay a phone answering service, hire a virtual receptionist, or use an AI receptionist? The prices are all over the place, and most providers bill in different units: minutes, calls or flat fees.

This guide lines up what providers publish on their own pricing pages, converts it to a cost per call or minute, and explains when each option makes sense.

What providers actually charge

Prices below are taken from each provider's own website in September 2026. We link every source so you can check it.

Checked September 30, 2026. Cost per unit is the plan price divided by the minutes or calls included, before overage. US-based services bill in US dollars, so Canadian businesses also pay the exchange rate. Prices change; confirm with the provider.

Why the per-call math matters

A staffed service that looks cheap at $250 a month can be the expensive option once you divide by what it includes. Ruby's entry plan is 50 minutes, which at a typical 2 to 3 minutes per call is roughly 17 to 25 calls a month. Smith.ai's entry plan is 30 calls. If you get 5 calls a day, you're past those bundles in the first week and paying overage.

AI answering services price in much larger bundles or flat fees because an extra call costs them very little. That's the real difference: with people, cost rises with every minute; with AI, it barely moves.

When a staffed answering service is the better choice

Your calls need judgment

Medical triage, legal intake with sensitive details, upset customers and complicated quotes are still better handled by a trained person. If most of your calls look like that, a staffed service or your own team is worth the higher cost per call.

You get very few calls

If you only need coverage for a handful of overflow calls a week, a small staffed bundle can be enough and the price difference is small.

When an AI receptionist is the better choice

Most calls to a local business are routine: hours, prices, availability, directions, booking, rescheduling. An AI receptionist answers those on the first ring, 24/7, handles several calls at once and books straight into your calendar. It's the better fit when you miss calls during busy hours or after closing, when call volume swings, or when you want every call written down with a summary.

The catch is setup. A generic subscription works out of the box but knows little about your business. A custom build takes two to three weeks, but it knows your services, prices and rules for when to hand a call to a person.

A simple way to decide

Count last month's calls and sort them into three piles: routine (booking, hours, prices), needs judgment, and spam. If routine calls are the biggest pile, an AI receptionist will cover most of your phone for the lowest cost per call. If judgment calls dominate, pay for people. Many businesses end up with both: AI answers first and transfers the calls that need a human.

Where Leonyx AI fits

We build custom AI receptionists for Canadian businesses from $750 CAD, plus phone and call-minute costs at cost, with no per-call markup. The setup is registered in your business's name, it keeps your existing number through call forwarding, and every call ends with a summary to your team. Common questions

How much does a phone answering service cost in Canada?

Staffed services published from about $275 CAD a month (Telelink) to US$250 to US$2,100 a month for US-based virtual receptionist services like Ruby and Smith.ai, depending on the minutes or calls included. AI answering services published from about C$99 to $999 CAD a month.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than an answering service?

Per call, usually yes. At the published bundles above, staffed services work out to roughly US$3 to US$10 per call or minute, while AI subscriptions work out to about $1 CAD per call or a flat monthly fee. The gap shrinks for businesses with very few calls, where a small staffed bundle can be enough.

What's the difference between a virtual receptionist and an answering service?

In practice the terms overlap. An answering service usually takes messages and dispatches urgent calls. A virtual receptionist usually does more: books appointments, answers questions about your business and transfers calls. AI receptionists can do both.

Do I still need a person?

For complaints, emotional calls and complex quotes, yes. The best setups let the AI handle bookings and routine questions and transfer or flag everything else to a person.
