Local SEO Toronto: A 15-Point Checklist for GTA Businesses (2026)

By Laith Nasrallah·October 18, 2026·8 min read

Quick answer

Local SEO in Toronto comes down to five things: a complete Google Business Profile, enough reviews to match the businesses already on the map, real photos, a website with a page for each service, and consistent listings across the web. In our study of 11,429 GTA Google Maps listings, top-3 businesses had about 3x the reviews and 2x the photos of those ranked below 10th.

Most local SEO checklists are written for anywhere. This one is built from what we measured in the GTA: 11,429 Google Maps listings for dentists, clinics, law firms, trades and realtors across 12 areas, plus 8,149 business websites. Where a step comes from that data, I'll give you the number. Work through it top to bottom; the early items are the fastest wins.

Google Business Profile

1. Claim and verify your profile.

In our study, 98% of businesses in the Maps top 3 had a claimed profile. It won't put you on top by itself, but you can't compete without it.

2. Pick the most specific primary category.

"Family law attorney" beats "Lawyer"; "Roofing contractor" beats "Contractor". Add secondary categories only for services you really offer.

3. Set your service area or address honestly.

If customers don't visit you, set it up as a service-area business and hide the address. Fake addresses and virtual offices get profiles suspended.

4. Fill in services, hours and a description.

List each service you want to be found for, with holiday hours kept current. Write the description for customers, not as a keyword list.

Reviews

5. Know your target number.

Search your main service and area and count the reviews of the three businesses on the map. Across our GTA data the top-3 median was 134 reviews against 42 for businesses below 10th, but it ranged from about 75 for trades and law firms to about 370 for dentists.

6. Ask every customer, every time.

Send your direct review link by text right after the job or appointment. Ask everyone, not just happy customers, and never offer anything in return; Google doesn't allow either.

7. Reply to every review.

Thank people by name for good reviews and answer bad ones calmly with how you'll fix it. Future customers read the replies.

Photos and posts

8. Add real photos every month.

Top-3 profiles had a median of 28 photos, twice the 14 of businesses below 10th. Your team, your location and real work, not stock images.

9. Post updates on your profile.

A short post every week or two (a recent job, a seasonal tip, an offer) shows the profile is active and gives customers a reason to call.

Your website

10. Link your website from the profile.

97% of top-3 businesses linked a website, against 91% of the rest. Link to the page that best matches your main service, often the homepage.

11. Build one page per main service.

A roofer needs a roof repair page and a roof replacement page, not one "Services" page. Each should say where you work.

12. Make it easy to contact you on a phone.

In our study of 8,149 GTA business websites, a third offered only a phone number. Add tap-to-call, a short form or online booking, and make sure someone answers.

13. Add LocalBusiness schema.

Structured data with your name, phone, area and hours helps Google connect your site to your profile.

Citations

14. Make your name, address and phone match everywhere.

Check Yelp, Yellow Pages, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places and the directories in your industry. Fix old phone numbers and old addresses first.

15. Get listed where your industry looks.

Law firms on legal directories, dentists on health directories, trades on HomeStars and similar. Relevant listings beat hundreds of random ones.

What to do first

If you only have an hour this week: check your primary category, add ten real photos, and text your review link to every customer from the last month. Those three steps close the biggest gaps we saw between the top 3 and everyone else. The full data, broken down by industry, is in our GTA Google Maps ranking study.

If you'd rather have it done for you, our Toronto SEO service covers every item on this list, and we also work across Mississauga and Brampton. There are industry guides for dentists, law firms and contractors.

Common questions

What is local SEO?

Local SEO is the work that helps a business show up when people nearby search for what it offers, both in the Google Maps box and in the regular results below it. It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, your website's service pages and your listings on other sites.

How long does local SEO take in Toronto?

Profile fixes and new photos can show in a few weeks. Moving into the Maps top 3 usually depends on closing the review gap with the businesses already there, which takes a few months of asking every customer. New service pages typically take two to four months to reach page one.

What matters most for ranking on Google Maps?

Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence. In our study of 11,429 GTA listings, the clearest difference between the top 3 and the rest was the number of reviews (median 134 vs 42), followed by photos (28 vs 14). Star ratings were the same in both groups.

How much does local SEO cost in Toronto?

You can do much of this checklist yourself for free. If you hire help, prices vary widely by agency and by how competitive your industry is. Our SEO plan, which includes local SEO, is $2,000 CAD a month, and our one-time SEO audit is $500 CAD.
