SEO vs Google Ads in Toronto: What a Click Actually Costs (2026)
Quick answer
In Google's keyword data for Toronto, one ad click costs anywhere from US$0.75 ("realtor toronto") to US$73 ("personal injury lawyer toronto"). Most trades and dental searches cost US$7 to US$27 a click. Ads are the fast option and SEO is the one that keeps paying off, so the higher the cost per click in your industry, the more SEO is worth. For most local businesses the answer is ads on your most urgent searches while SEO builds.
When owners ask me whether they should do SEO or Google Ads, the honest answer is that it depends on one number: what a click costs in your industry. So I pulled Google's own keyword data for the Toronto searches our clients care about. The spread is bigger than most people expect.

What those numbers mean
Law firms pay the most
At about US$73 a click for "personal injury lawyer toronto", 100 clicks cost US$7,300. If 1 in 10 of those visitors calls (an example, not a benchmark; use your own number), each call costs about US$730 before anyone signs. Family law is cheaper at about US$22 a click, but it's searched 4,400 times a month, so budgets add up fast. This is where SEO has the clearest payoff, because ranking for the same search costs nothing per click.
Plumbers and dentists sit in the middle
"Plumber toronto" and "dentist toronto" both cost about US$18 a click with 4,400 searches a month. Emergency searches cost more: "emergency plumber toronto" was about US$26. Those urgent searches are where ads earn their keep, because the person calls whoever shows up first and you can turn the ads off when you're fully booked.
Some searches are cheap to buy
"Realtor toronto" had 8,100 searches a month at about US$0.75 a click, and "furnace repair toronto" was under US$5. When a click is that cheap, ads can be the better deal, at least while your SEO catches up. I'd rather tell you that than sell you SEO you don't need yet.
What ads can't buy
The Google Maps top 3, the box with the map and three businesses, isn't for sale. Ads can show above it, marked as sponsored, but the three spots themselves are earned through your Google Business Profile, your reviews and your website. In our study of 11,429 GTA businesses on Google Maps, the businesses in the top 3 had a median of 134 reviews against 42 for those ranked below 10th. No ad budget closes that gap.
Ads also stop the day you stop paying. SEO work, like a better profile, a page for each service and a steady flow of reviews, keeps bringing calls after the work is done.
How to decide
Look up your two or three most important searches in the table, or in Google's Keyword Planner, and work out what 100 clicks a month would cost you in ads. Then compare that with a monthly SEO budget.
- If 100 clicks cost more than an SEO plan, SEO is the better long-term spend, and ads are a stopgap at most.
- If clicks are cheap and you need calls this month, start with ads and build SEO in the background.
- If you're not in the Maps top 3 for your main search, that's an SEO problem whichever way you go, because ads can't put you there.
Whichever you choose, make sure someone answers the phone. Paying US$26 for a click from someone with a burst pipe and sending them to voicemail is the most expensive mistake in this whole article.

Common questions
Is SEO or Google Ads better for a small business in Toronto?
It depends on what a click costs in your industry and how fast you need calls. Ads bring calls this week but cost money for every click, from under a dollar for "realtor toronto" to over $70 for "personal injury lawyer toronto" in Google's data. SEO takes months but keeps working without a per-click cost. Many local businesses run ads on their most urgent searches while SEO builds.
How much does a Google Ads click cost in Toronto?
In Google's keyword data for Toronto in October 2026, average costs per click ranged from US$0.75 for "realtor toronto" to US$73.02 for "personal injury lawyer toronto". Most trades and dental searches sat between about US$7 and US$27.
Can you pay to get into the Google Maps top 3?
Not in the regular map results. The local pack is organic, so it's earned through your Google Business Profile, reviews and website. Ads can show above it, but they're labelled as sponsored.
How long does SEO take compared with ads?
Ads can bring clicks the day a campaign goes live. SEO usually takes a few weeks for Google Business Profile fixes to show and two to four months for new pages to reach page one, depending on competition.
